NCRP Executive Director Aaron Dorfman will discuss ways CJA members can access more funding from foundations and how they can influence foundations to (1) give more funding that targets marginalized/underserved communities and (2) use the social justice funding strategies of advocacy, community organizing, and/or civic engagement.

Then, Terri Langston, the author of NCRP's report, "Towards Transforming Change in Health Care: High Impact Strategies for Philanthropy," will dig deeper into health funding examples.

Racial and ethnic health inequities persist from the cradle to the grave, in the form of higher rates of infant mortality, disease and disability, and premature mortality for many communities of color relative to national averages. The causes of these inequities are complex, but are associated with differences in sociŒconomic status, environmental risks and exposures, occupational exposures, health behaviors, and access to health care. At their core, many of these factors can be traced to differences in neighborhood and work environments that are the result of residential segregation and other structural inequalities.

This presentation explores how neighborhood and community contexts directly and indirectly shape health and contribute to health inequities as a result of racial and ethnic residential segregation. The presentation will also feature a discussion of policy strategies that de-concentrate poverty and increase investments in health-enhancing resources in communities that suffer from disinvestment.

Objectives:

  1. Participants should be able to identify social and economic conditions that shape health and health inequities.
  2. Participants should be able to identify why residential segregation is a root cause of these inequities.
  3. Participants should be able to identify at least three policy strategies (i.e., land use) that can address these inequities.

Overview of Presentation:
 
Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Triple Aim organizations pursue better health for populations, improve experience of care, and lower per capita costs. There has been an evolution within organizations focused on the IHI Triple Aim from sub-populations to a geographic region. In this webinar, Dr. Whittington will explore IHI's current thinking on the distinctive issues and opportunities presented by regionally-defined Triple Aim improvement, including high-level learning from several IHI Triple Aim regional sites. In addition, he will discuss how this work supports national initiatives such as those focused on care coordination and accountable care organizations.
 
Learning Objectives:   From this one and a half hour webinar, participants will be able to
 
- Understand the framework used for regions striving to accomplish the IHI Triple Aim
- Gain lessons learned from IHI Triple Aim regional sites
- Describe the linkages between this work and national initiatives
